Workflow and Team Involvement
According to the specs, the diagramming feature
has also been enhanced. The flow of a complex site is made vastly easier by drawing a diagram
and seeing the big-picture of the project. Now you can do your layout right in GoLive instead of having to turn to another
page layout application like Illustrator.
After designing, you can export it directly to an Acrobat PDF or SVG file for presenting
to the rest of the team. GoLive can also take your most complicated site diagrams and generate live pages for you to start
filling with content.
But I have to admit the diagramming idea was confusing to me, and in the time allotted for evaluating this
product, I was unable to get the full value of this feature, and I consider myself pretty computer-savvy. (I will investigate it further
later). The manual was not very helpful. But, in Adobe's defense, I have not needed to share ideas with a design team as I work
alone (and am both designer and programmer), and so this concept is foreign to me. I imagine this is a wonderful feature for
people working in teams.
Another feature that aids in team-run projects is the Web Workgroup Server. An administrator can assign different
levels of permission to each team member so each can only affect the areas of the site they are responsible for. Also, files
can be checked in and out so different versions can't be worked on at the same time. And, the administrator can always roll
back to a working version if modifications have caused problems.
Search And Replace
In another HTML editor whose name I won't mention, I am able
to search for all occurrences of something throughout the whole site and then change that with a single click of a button. With
GoLive's Search and Replace, there are several ways of finding the offending file in order to change things, but the
search criteria is based on the name of the file, or invalid HTML tags, or certain errors, etc. But if I want to change, say, my
phone number (a text element that appears in multiple files), there is no global way to do this. So, I use the other program.
Spell Checking
I found it interesting that GoLive's spell checker did not recognize "GoLive" and suggested "Glove". Nor did it recognize other
computing-related terms such as HTML or URL--it suggested hurl for that one :-). Of course, it was easy enough to hit the
"Learn" button so those terms would be recognized on the next spell checking attempt.
Final Words
I am pleased with GoLive and especially its tight integration with the other Adobe products I regularly use. The occasional
wizard and a basic Hints palette all make the GoLive interface
more user-friendly, but there is still a huge learning curve involved in getting the most out of this application. Anybody who has
used Photoshop will be nodding their heads in agreement. But, just like Photoshop, it is worth the effort. And I know no
development team can think
of everything (I used to be on that side of software), so that is why people like me check out the software in real life situations
and make suggestions. Overall, it is a very powerful product that I will use.
