Working With Dynamic Content Generation
The Dynamic Content tools have been completely revamped, and now support not only ASP, but also JSP and
PHP server-side scripting technologies via drag-and-drop objects. A Dynamic Content wizard ensures your setup is
correct even if you have no interest or experience in diving into the code. What's even better is that GoLive includes a
free app server if you don't already have one. Now it is almost a simple task to set up a hosted shop site.
Working With Templates
This feature I found to be wonderful (can I put 2 smiley faces here?). A good part of my work involves setting up templates
and delivering to the customer so they can then maintain the content themselves. You can highlight the area of the page
where the content is, and assign it a Template Region using the Template Regions Palette,
and then that section gets color coded for very easy identification on the user's part. No more trying to describe to the non-web-developer
just where they can edit without messing up the design. Only problem here is the client must also be using GoLive.
Wireless Support
GoLive 6 also recognizes that Web programming is continually evolving. You can now create sites for Wireless viewing
by targeting your page for XHTML, i-Mode (CHTML), WAP and WML. It also includes phone emulators to preview your wireless authoring work right in GoLive. Unfortunately, this wireless preview capability is available on the Windows platform only.
Layout Grids and Tables
Earlier versions of the Layout Grids, the drag-and-drop way to create HTML tables had a problem in that the process
often resulted in bloated code. I always found it much easier to work with tables in Source Mode. GoLive 6 changes
this a bit with the ability to cut and paste directly from Word and Excel. The Table Palette now also includes pixel
information for your rows and cells and an easy way to move in and out of nested tables. Selecting a single table cell
offers up a full set of button commands within the Row and Cell inspectors to delete the column or row. The coolest thing
about the layout grid is that it is so easy to quickly design a page with it. Complex designs using
nested tables are a breeze to create and maintain.
Multimedia
GoLive has always been very strong in dealing with multimedia, and version 6 is even stronger. With its advanced QuickTime
capability, you can now directly edit streaming media. Wow.
